Mark Levinson #5909: These are premium audio brand Mark Levinson’s first headphones, and yes, they’re really expensive at $999. They are also very good. They have a sturdy design without managing to feel heavy on your head (read: they’re substantial but not too heavy) and are comfortable to wear for long periods of time thanks to their well-padded and removable leather-covered ear cups and headbands. Soundcore by Anker Space One: The Space One is a good value at around $100, offering a strong feature set along with good sound quality and performance. They can’t compete in terms of sound with many of the premium noise canceling models, but you don’t feel like you’re giving up so much in terms of sound to save a lot of money. They lack a bit of that natural, refined quality you look for in a great set of boxes, but the Space One sounds respectable, with decent bass clarity and definition, and measures up well against the more expensive Soundcore Space 45.
Technics EAH-A800: There’s a bit of an old-school vibe to the Technics EAH-A800 — and it’s not just the Technics brand that Panasonic has resurrected over the past few years. Their design is something of a throwback, but these headphones are comfortable and fold and fold. They feature a powerful, punchy sound with powerful bass and good detail, although they take a day or two to break in.
State between 3ANC: The Status headphones aren’t exactly the sleekest or most attractive headphones you can buy, but if you don’t mind their utilitarian look and giant handles, you’ve got a great-sounding set of headphones. The Between 3ANC, the company’s first noise-cancelling headphones, also do a good job of canceling out ambient sound, though they don’t quite reach the level of noise-canceling Bose QuietComfort 2 headphones. They performed very well in my voice call test, cutting out much of the background noise around me on the streets of New York while picking up my voice clearly, or so the callers told me.
