A luxury car worth nearly $400,000 was destroyed when a fire engine targeted a McLaren parked in the street late last night.
Police are now searching for the culprit who was caught on security footage using a pizza box to start the blaze in Sefton in Sydney’s west.
It was a dream car for Hamad Ajaiz, who dropped $350,000 on the McLaren just over a year ago.
The builder and father of three listed the car for sale online just three days ago.
It has now been taken down, with Ajajz saying it was “very upsetting”.
“I can’t even look at it,” he said.
But this was not professional work.
The footage shows an unsuspecting man with an umbrella armed with a lighter and cardboard.
Shortly before 11 p.m., he appeared on Rod Street.
A flickering flame is shielded by his umbrella as he lights a pizza box on fire.
He slides the flame under the armor before running away.
Attempts by neighbors to throw water on the flames were unsuccessful.
Hamad and his son arrived home moments before firefighters began extinguishing the blaze.
“It’s devastating to be honest. The way we walked in and saw it burning,” he said through tears.
“I don’t think there’s anyone who can do it for us.
“He probably wanted a ride and I may never have given him the opportunity, maybe.”
The car is insured and the police are calling for help.
