Along with his wife Holly and their three children, the family said goodbye to the animal that “brought so much happiness”.
Hughes, 53, announced the loss live on air while talking to co-star Erin Molan.
“Last night we lost our dog, Barkley, who had been with us for 17 years, a beautiful member of the family,” he told Husey, Ed and Erin.
“(I) took him out for a walk yesterday and he was good, he was happy, he was sniffling, he was just living his best life, no doubt about it.
“But when we got home, Barkley sat down and just couldn’t get up, we knew he was close (to death).”
Hughes then pointed out that the family had made the heartbreaking decision to let go of the beloved pet.
“So we made the decision that the last night would be Barkley’s last night with us,” Hughes said.
“Seventeen years with something you love that has been around longer than your children (and that) has brought so much happiness to our family — we will miss him.
“But what I take with me … with Barkley is that he loved life, he loved every day.”
Friends of the radio star shared messages of support, commenting on the Instagram post that cut the radio segment.
“I’m so sorry my friend. Barkley has always been front and center. And a perfect brother for the kids. What a life he lived,” said Dr. Chris Brown.
The morning show co-owner Kylie Gillis said, “A wonderful tribute to your little mate.”
